about

The Bridge City Dixieland Jazz Band was one of the many good things to come out of Canada's Centennial celebrations in 1967. Just for the fun of it, six musicians donned boater hats and candy-striped blazers and played on a float in Saskatoon's annual Travellers Day parade. Much to the surprise of the musicians, bookings began coming in, and in less than a year the band was firmly established in Saskatoon and well known in the surrounding area.

In a full-page feature on the band, the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix enthusiastically announced, "Jazz Is Back In Town." Regional and national recognition followed with performances on the CBC national radio network, the release of an album of Dixieland favorites, and television credits.

Over the next three decades, the Bridge City Dixieland Jazz Band has played for every imaginable event, venue, and audience, including dances, concerts, receptions, exhibitions, floor shows, official openings, commercial promotions, breakfasts, luncheons, banquets, anniversaries, picnics, weddings, and funerals. One of the highlights of the band's career was a week-long run in the Saskatchewan pavilion of Expo-86 in Vancouver. It was also featured at the Chilliwack International Jazz Festival in 1990, and is a regular at the annual Saskatchewan Jazz Festival in Saskatoon.

In a very real way, the Bridge City players are closer to the originators of jazz than many full-time musicians. Like the first New Orleans jazzmen, they have supported themselves in other professions and played in their leisure hours, not because they have to in order to earn a living, but for the sheer love of playing.
